Delhi Province – a Tree for the Planet

During the monsoon season the Delhi province communities and institutions planted more than 2000 trees. In several places this was made into an event with large attendance and awareness programmes. The last tree to be planted was the PROVINCE TREE FOR THE PLANET EARTH IN Delhi in September. This tree commemorates the 400 year Mary Ward Jubilee. It symbolises also the province’s concern for and commitment to environmental issues.
The new provincial house under construction in Delhi is situated in Rohini. In Delhi one cannot afford to have an independent garden. Fortunately there is a small area allotted for a park which is on the south western side of our building. It belongs to the government but the CJ are free to care for it. The architect identified the ideal spot for planting the tree, the Jesuits donated the tree, and one of the watchmen dug the pit. Sr Mariella (the provincial superior) planted it, Sr Tarcisia watered it, another watchman built up a temporary tree guard with bricks, and one of the supervisors took the responsibility for watering it daily. This event turned out to be a kind of Unity in Diversity.
After planting the tree Sr Mariella dedicated it to all those friends, neighbours and others who might meet under the tree and called it the FRIENDSHIP TREE. Thus the planting of this tree was ‘the planting of an idea.’

The 28th of March was a special day for the new Generalate team.

In the late morning  the British Ambassador to the Holy See, Nigel Baker, paid a courtesy call on Sister Jane and the whole team.   In answer to his questions, Jane told him a little about Mary Ward and our charism and history.  Mention was also made of our shift from being a religious congregation which was largely identified as running schools to a congregation  which has a wide field of apostolic works and reaches out to where the need is greatest. He was very interested to hear in which apostolic missions we are involved as Congregatio Jesu.

The new General secretary has arrived!

The new Generalate team is almost complete. On the 28th of March the new General Secretary , Sr. Františka Sedlaková from Slovakia arrived in Rome. She will replace Sr. Gertrud Himmel, who carried on with the work during the interim period between the old and the new Generalates.   Sr. Františká’s most recent mission has been as the Provincial Secretary of the Slovak Province. She has spent the last two months in Cambridge in England working on her English. We are delighted to have her with us and also very grateful to Sister Gertrud for all she has given to the CJ as General Secretary over the past nine and a half years. We wish her every blessing as she returns to Germany and her new mission there.
