Fr. Suresh Mathew, a Capuchin priest and an inspiring communicator well known for his expertise in journalism, social communication, and media, conducted a three-day session on Digital Media and an Introduction to Journalism for members under the age of 40 in the Nepal Region. Many other members from the valley also took the opportunity to attend the seminar. His talks were centered on the theme “Digital Drift – Staying Anchored in Christ in a Connected World.” Through his rich knowledge and personal experiences, he helped the participants understand the growing influence of digital media in today’s world.
He spoke about the many challenges that Consecrated People face in the digital age. He explained that excessive and careless use of digital media can weaken one’s consecration and distract from the true mission of religious life. It can slowly take away the spirit of prayer, silence, and deeper commitment to God.
At the same time, Fr. Suresh also highlighted the positive ways digital media can be used in religious life. He shared that when used wisely, it can become a powerful tool for evangelization, communication, learning, and spreading hope to others. It can also help religious communities stay connected and reach out to people in need.
He further explained important terms such as digital natives and digital migrants, pointing out the differences in the way various generations relate to technology. He helped the participants understand the need to bridge this gap with patience, openness, and wisdom.
He encouraged all the participants to use digital media with prudence and responsibility, reminding them that it is a gift given by God for the good of humanity. His inspiring sessions created awareness about both the benefits and dangers of digital media. The participants felt enlightened and motivated to use technology with wisdom, balance, and vigilance in the future, always remaining rooted in Christ.
Emphasizing the need to develop speaking and writing skills, he also gave the participants various exercises on writing news reports, obituaries, reports on various events, and letters to the editor during the following two days of the session. These practical exercises helped the participants improve their communication and writing abilities. They learned how to express their thoughts clearly, accurately, and confidently.
Through these activities, the sisters gained a better understanding of the importance of language in media and public communication. The sessions also encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and attention to detail. The participants found the exercises enriching and useful for their future ministry and mission.
Overall, the three-day session was a fruitful and enriching experience for all the participants. It not only broadened their knowledge of digital media and journalism but also inspired them to use modern technology wisely while remaining faithful to their religious values and mission.
