Hope in my life

During his audience on Wednesday 20 September 2017, Pope Francis said: ‘Dream! Dream of a world not yet seen, but which will certainly come…’.

These words made me reflect deeply on hope and how it has illuminated my life, especially at a crucial moment, such as when choosing my vocation.

Before making a concrete decision, I was going through a period of great uncertainty and confusion. Looking at my life, at the independence and stability I had built, it seemed that the decisive step was a leap in the dark. I felt like I was diving into a deep sea without knowing how to swim. Yet, in the midst of this inner turmoil, I clearly felt that I had to choose something else.

Looking back, I see how God guided me. It was precisely in that moment of uncertainty that I understood that the time had come to make a choice, even without knowing exactly where it would lead me.

Hope guided me. Hope, in fact, is like a light that illuminates the past, allowing us to accept it and learn from it; it illuminates the present, giving us clarity in discerning the time in which we live; and it projects our gaze towards the future, encouraging us not to stop, but to continue towards the fullness of life that God has prepared for us.

Hope, like light, not only guides us in the present, but also impels us to dream, to believe that, although the future may seem uncertain, God’s promises are firm and sure.

As St Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians, ‘God will enlighten your minds so that you can understand what his calling in Christ is, what the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints are, and what is the immeasurable greatness that belongs to him’ (Ephesians 1:18-19).
