Fighting Human Trafficking in Canada
Actively fighting Human Trafficking is one of the Key missions of the CJ sisters and lay collaborators in Canada.
The Loretto Sisters in Canada, established since 1847 to serve immigrant Irish communities, have created a hub for international anti-trafficking collaboration. Canadian Sisters serve as founding members and active coordinators of the Anti-Human Trafficking Network, a peer-support mechanism through which CJ sisters members from fifteen countries share trafficking experiences, evidence-based prevention strategies, and survivor-support innovations.
Sisters personally facilitate monthly network meetings via secure digital platforms, curating trafficking-response resources and coordinating international capacity-building webinars.
In December 2020, Canadian Sisters orchestrated a webinar examining the migration-trafficking nexus, engaging sisters from Kenya, Albania, and Nepal in structured dialogue addressing human smuggling, labour exploitation, and displacement vulnerabilities. Sisters actively advocate through congregational JPIC committees, integrating UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 into Canadian institutional programming and fundraising strategies.
In Canada, we work alongside lay collaborators in educational institutions and pastoral ministries, jointly designing trafficking-prevention curricula and mentoring emerging anti-trafficking practitioners. Thus, we enable to play a dual role, simultaneously serving as frontline practice-sharers and international infrastructure-builders, enabling systematic learning from geographically dispersed communities and translating field experience into policy influence.
