Where water flows, equality grows

We mark world water day with an overview of all our ministries and projects ensuring safe water, sanitation and gender equality.

World Water Day serves as a reminder of how important access to clean water is for everyone. This year, the theme of water and gender equality is the focus of global attention on World Water Day.

Water scarcity is a problem for all living beings. However, a lack of access to clean water and sanitation hits women and girls particularly hard. They are the ones who walk long distances to fetch water or have to queue for hours to get clean water. They are the ones who care for those who have fallen ill from dirty, contaminated water. It is they who, because of this work, lack time to learn, time to build a livelihood, and numerous other opportunities.
To make matters worse, women are generally not heard when it comes to making decisions about changes and improvements to living conditions.

Our Scrolly-Telling highlights why the water crisis is also a crisis for women and girls. It explains key facts and figures relating to water and gender equality. And it shows what the Sisters of the Congregatio Jesu and members of the global Mary Ward Family are doing to ensure access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene, food security and justice.
