Devastating forest fires in Chile: solidarity from the Mary Ward family

Enormous forest fires have led to a catastrophe in Chile. On Sunday, the forestry authority registered 188 fires across the country, covering an area totalling almost 29,000 hectares – roughly the size of Bremen. Thousands of houses have been damaged or destroyed, with more than 3,000 in the Valparaíso region alone, said Interior Minister Carolina Tohá.

President Gabriel Boric warned that the country was facing a “tragedy on a very large scale”. At least 112 people have died so far and hundreds of people are still missing, according to the authorities.

The Mary Ward Schools of the CJ Network in Chile and throughout the Amerindian Province are calling for united prayer for those affected by the forest fires, for the victims and their families. “We unite in prayer with all the families suffering from the fires and their catastrophic consequences and we call on the families of our schools to get involved and work together, just as Mary Ward said: Do good and do it well.”
